This mpeye mp3 player is the smallest 5GB player on the market, measuring only 7cm in length and weighing in at an astonishing 72 grams. But not content to rest on their laurels the clever people at mpeye have also included a colour screen and a host of other features like a FM radio, voice recorder and direct encoding.
When tested it was found to be hassle free, to drop and drag folders of artist albums to the player, automatically recognising artists, albums and songs via their IDE tags. The player acts as an external drive, you can also use the mp3 manager software included.

The navigation of the folders containing music is an acquired skill and not obvious from the instructions. When you press down on the joystick for a few seconds your presented with the file menu giving you the option of File Explorer and My pictures, When you choose the File Explorer and move the joystick to the right your presented with the most recent artist. Only from here can you then navigate into the root music directory containing all the artists, doing this by moving the joystick to the left. This now allows you to scroll down through the different artists. Apart from this little quirk, the navigation is easy and smooth. You can also drop and drag playlists onto the player.

The player also allows you to load pictures and store JPG pictures and view them, you can also edit the picture used for the back screen image. Even though the screen is small, the 65k colour screen does enable clearer viewing than a standard Blue backlight LCD screen.

Inbuilt FM radio quality is as good as other 5GB players we've tested, so the shrinkage did not compromise the quality in this area, it's also easy to quickly create station presets by pressing the record button for the station of choice. Please note you can't record radio broadcasts.

There are also all the usual familiar features like repeat sections A-B, repeat one song, random play, repeat folder and repeat all. The graphic equalizer includes the presets: Normal, Classic, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Live, Hall, 3D surround. The best soundings from these are the Rock, Jazz, 3D and Hall. There is also the option to define you own EQ settings. The sound quality is bright and clear with an earphone output of 30mW.

Encoding bit rate ranges from 32kbps to 192kbps mp3 quality and allows direct encoding from any lineout source.

It charges via the usb socket as well as via the charger (this is included) and the battery lasts for around 15 hours depending on the bit rate of your files and the image screen usage .

This player is a major achievement in terms of size and features, without compromising anything in the process.

Summer 2005 Supertest  "Verdict - Smaller than an ipod mini and able to hold just as much information, this is a seriously desirable little player with a good range of facilities"
Sensibly priced at just a little less than a 6GB ipod mini, and considerably smaller, this 5GB model from MPeye is claimed to be the smallest had-disk-based Mp3 player in the world. It's powered by by an internal lithium ion battery, charged either from your computer's USB port or using the plug-top mains adaptor supplied in the box. Two hours of charging will give you about 15 hours use, depending how much you utilise the colour screen display. There's also a line-input cable, the machine having user selectable onboard encoding and voice recording as well as the ability to record from the built-in FM tuner, and although the aluminium-over-plastic casework is black and silver, MPeye goes for ipod appeal with white headphones, a white neckstrap and a see-through case.

That hefty capacity will tempt those who shift around a lot of data - digital camera pictures take up a great deal of space - but the HTS-200 can more than hold its own as a portable music device. It will handle WMA, MP3 and OGG files, and the navigation is clear and logical using the joysitck and that colour screen. The head-phones supplied aren't amazing, but they can be replaced without spending a fortune, while the whole idea of being able to carry around so much music in a tiny unit adds hugely to the appeal.
